Build 2011 videos - an update

It’s now been a few days since we made our videos available to watch online, and what a wild few days it’s been. So far, we’ve had almost 200 people (!) sign up, which goes a long way to taking a chunk out of our production costs. To everyone that’s donated so far, helped spread the word, or had something kind to say about the talks, thank you.

After a lot of feedback and discussion, we’ve decided to make a few small changes to to the registration, donation and viewing process.

We’ve just now pushed an update removing the $15 and $20 donations, so it’s now just the single $10 donation to gain access. Once you’ve had a chance to check out the talks, you’ll have the option to tip a little more if you’d like. We’ve had a lot of people asking how they can donate more, so we’re making that possible. If you don’t want to, that’s okay too.

We’ve also added a progress bar to let you know how close we are to covering our costs. After a month, or once we’ve covered our costs through registrations and tips, whichever comes first, all of the videos and resources will be made freely available for everyone. Right now, we’re around 20% of the way there.

Build 2011 - videos now available!

Good news, everyone! The videos of each of the talks from Build 2011 are now available for you to watch online. This year though, we’re doing things a little differently.

Every few days, we’ll be making a new video available over on our Vimeo channel. Over the next few weeks, every video will be available to watch and share, for free, over on Vimeo.

Or, you can choose to pay a little — $10, $15 or $20 — and get immediate access to every video right now. Not only that, but you’ll get a whole bunch of additional assets — like audio versions, full transcripts, slides for each presentations, and collected links and resources.

You can pay what you like, each donation level gets you full access regardless of how much you choose to pay, and if you’d rather not donate, we’ll still be making each video available for free over the next few weeks on Vimeo.

Attendees of last year’s conference will tell you, each of these talks were absolutely stellar. As an example of the day’s standard, our first freely available video is Simon Collison’s “We Are The Explorers”, which was the concluding talk of last year’s conference.

Announcing this year's compere: Jesse Thorn

In my experience, a successful conference should not simply be a collection of stories, but should themselves weave a greater narrative throughout the day. This is something that’s happened unaided at Build in previous years, but this year, we didn’t want to leave that up to chance. We are proud to introduce our compère, Jesse Thorn.

Jesse Thorn is the host and producer of The Sound of Young America, a syndicated arts and culture interview program distributed by Public Radio International and carried on stations around the United States. He also co-hosts Jordan, Jesse, Go!, a popular comedy podcast, and is producer and “Bailiff” on the Judge John Hodgman podcast. Jesse is the founder and principal of MaximumFun.org, a listener-supported, independent media outlet that produces and distributes comedy podcasts and puts on a popular annual conference known as MaxFunCon. Additionally, Jesse hosts and helps produce Put This On, a video series and blog about men’s style. He formerly hosted The Grid, a culture recommendation program on IFC: The Independent Film Channel.

However, a compère is but one piece of this puzzle. We’ve been working closely with each of this year’s speakers to better understand what ideas they want to share with you, and each of the stories that they are trying to tell. Our speakers have also been discussing their talks with each other regularly, which has shaped their presentations to not only avoid redundancy, but to cultivate overlap where it might prove valuable to deliver a greater message. This has paid off handsomely, as our lineup this year is already coming together to be one of the most interesting collection of stories, theories and ideas that we’ve ever given a home to.

On the day, we’ll be confidently handing over responsibility of the narration to one of this generation’s greatest storytellers. It is an honour and a privilege to have Jesse joining the Build team this year, and I for one am excited to see the results of this experiment. We hope you are too.

This year’s Official 2011 Build T-Shirt, designed by Jez Burrows, is now available over on our spiffy new online shop. While we’ll have some available to purchase during the week of Build, we’ve also made a limited number available on our store to pre-order, for those keen to guarantee they don’t miss out.

We’ve also added a limited-edition tee to celebrate the launch of ‘Fiction’, the made-up company behind organising Build and publishing The Manual. Expertly designed by Mikey Burton, we’re only producing a limited run, so get your hands on one before they disappear!

Announcing Ghostbusters!

Pretty stoked to announce that we’ll be screening Ghostbusters as the headline feature at this year’s Build Film, taking place on Monday evening in the Black Box.

When Dr. Peter Venkman and his Columbia University colleagues are kicked out of their prestigious academic posts, they start a private practice as professional ghost-catchers. When beautiful Dana Barrett contracts them, it seems her apartment has become the entryway for ghastly ghosts and goofy ghouls hellbent on terrorizing New York City.

What better way to close out the first dedicated film programme at Build with the 1984 classic. Tickets to the film events will made available very soon, stay tuned to Twitter for the final film announcement and more details.

Announcing Linotype: The Film!

We’re kicking off the announcements for this year’s (now full-blown evening-long) film programme with a special sneak-preview screening of the highly anticipated documentary, Linotype: The Film.

Linotype: The Film is a feature-length documentary centered around the Linotype typecasting machine. Called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by Thomas Edison, it revolutionised printing and society, yet few people know about the inventor or his fascinating machine. The film tells the surprisingly emotional story of the people connected to the Linotype and how it impacted the world.

Director Doug Wilson will also be hosting the screening, including a Q&A, which will follow an exclusive sneak-preview cut of the film, due to be finished in early 2012. Needless to say, we’re pretty excited to have it kick off this year’s film day lineup!

2011 Conference pass registration open:

Registration opened just over three hours ago, and we’ve now (at time of writing) all but 28 passes remaining. Student conference passes sold out in 90 seconds.

Right With You

Just over a week ago, we made the decision to delay the launch of the new Build website beyond our original date of last Friday. At that point, it was clear that some events still needed work and we weren’t just ready to throw the switch. So—we’ve come up with a new plan.

Our new website will go live at midday this coming Monday—at which point we’ll announce the full lineup and schedule for the conference, as well as the majority of the fringe events that will be happening throughout Build. Over the course of next week, we’ll continue to bring the rest of the week’s schedule online, resulting in passes going on sale at midday on Friday 8th April.

You can follow the countdown and sign up to the mailing list over at http://2011.buildconf.com. We’ll email you once on Monday to let you know that we’ve launched, and then again on Friday to let you know that the tickets are on sale.

We’ve made some pretty exciting improvements this year, building upon what the event has evolved into over the past two years to now fill an entire five days with everything from talks, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, parties—and some events that are completely new to our schedule in 2011. This is what Build has been working towards since its inception, it’s exciting to see it almost fully realised and it’s even more exciting to finally get to share it with everyone next week.

It’s also worth taking a moment to sing the praises of Kyle Meyer and Stuart Johnston for working with me to get everything designed, built and tested ready for launch. Our website looks absolutely incredible this year, and it’s down to their tireless efforts and unyielding perfectionism that it’s so solid.
